Having been through KL more times that we have been able to keep track of we are pretty expert at sniffing out cheap hotels and good deals and for the first time ever we were about to experience some hotel luxury. Thanks to my amazingly skilled husband who had won a 2 night stay at a delicious hotel thanks to winning a competition in Air Asia’s inflight magazine; we were off to stay in the Aloft Hotel. A hotel that we usually drag our bags past on our way through Sentral Station, oh how the other half live!! As we arrived in KL at 4am we booked into the pod hotel at the airport for a few hours to get a bit of sleep before heading to the city. The worst thing about this was that the pods were all single sex so for the first time in over 4 years we had to spend the night apart :o( The other problem was that the vast majority of people were getting up at 4am to get early flights and the thin blind between me and several loud arguing girls and the sound of twenty alarm clocks going off meant that sleep was not going to come easy, but after the intitial rush is quietened down and we got a couple of hours sleep. Our arrival at our posh hotel was pretty odd as we checked in and were sent to our room and as I opened the room I quickly jumped back and closed it again as the room was full of luggage and clearly the previous guests hadn’t departed. I headed back to see the receptionist who looked at me like I was either mad, lying or had somehow managed to break into the wrong room. They were adamant that the occupants had checked out at 4am in the morning and the room was definitely ready for us but begrudgingly gave us a key to another room, thankfully this time there were no surprises. We made full use of the hotel, we swam in the rain in the roof top pool, we drank every free sachet of tea and coffee going, we wore the dressing gowns and demolished the breakfast buffet to the extent that we didn’t need to eat again until dinner. To say that we made the most of our free hotel stay would be an understatement, we well and truly used and abused it and had the time of our lives. Thank you Air Asia, time to get back to the scruffy backpackers we really are, onwards to Makassar to begin our tour of Sulawesi.
